Somewhere out there is another Alexandra Grant. She is the wife of an actor, and as far as I know she has done nothing wrong. The problem is that several book platforms have decided her page is my page.
So I open a platform to check on my books, and there they are, filed under the wrong Alexandra Grant. My name, her page. I send a request to move them. Someone replies. The books move. A week later they drift back, like a cat returning to a sofa it was told to leave.
The standard advice is to change my name. Add a space. Swap the dash. Use an initial, a middle name, a period in a strange place. I have thought about it and the answer is no. I am Alexandra Grant. I was Alexandra Grant before I published a word, and I will be Alexandra Grant on the cover of every book I write. If a system cannot tell two women apart, the fix belongs to the system, not to the woman with fewer followers.
So I am doing it the slow way, one platform at a time, politely and with receipts, until my books sit on my page and nowhere else. I am also writing a longer piece about the whole saga, and I’ll share it when it’s ready.
If you have ever had your name borrowed by a stranger, you already know. And if you’re the other Alexandra Grant, hello. Please enjoy your page. I would like my books back.I would like to formally thank Facebook for teaching me a new life skill this week: how to pay a corporation to promote my book as a different entity than myself.
The Crayon Corner
Five pieces this week, mostly faces, one very patient pitcher of water. If the bearded man looks like he’s judging your week, he is.
